The main objective of the game is to complete the songs with the highest number of points and win the \"Best of the World\" trophy. The number of accumulated points is displayed on the main menu screen, encouraging players to immediately play songs and earn as many points as possible. The tracklist for the game features most of the major songs of the 1990s, including songs by U2, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Guns N' Roses and the Bee Gees. There are also songs contributed by bands from the second half of the 1990s and 2000s, such as Barenaked Ladies, Daughtry and Jimmy Eat World. There are also songs by artists that have had songs included in Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero 2, including Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Korn, Pantera and The Offspring. The songs from Guitar Hero III are excluded until Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, and the songs from Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s are excluded from the game. In addition, the special editions of the game feature songs by bands who have worked with Guitar Hero development team, including 311, Puddle of Mudd, Deftones and Cypress Hill.
Gameplay in Smash Hits builds on the previous games in the series and includes new features. The rhythms of rock songs are simulated in two-note rhythms, but music played on acoustic and electric guitars can vary and the chord progressions are simplified to certain standard patterns, as well as using triplets and arpeggios.
